THE COLLECTION OF REV. ROBERT BENJAMIN PORTER AND AGNES PORTER of the China Inland mission.
Robert B. Porter, of the China Inland Mission, was for many years a missionary in Guang’an (Kwangan) near Chongqing (Shungking), in Sichuan (Szechuan) province. He first arrived in China in October 1907, spending a period in 1907-8 in the China Inland Mission training home run by Mr. and Mrs. Bland in Anqing (Anking) in Anhui province. In December 1912 he married Agnes, another missionary, and they appear to have remained in China, with occasional trips back to England, until well into the 1930s. They had two daughters, Alison and Mildred.
The present collection comprises 42 items, almost all with the ownership signatures or stamps of Robert Porter, in English and Chinese, including numerous examples of rare Chinese scripture printing and hymnals from c. 1890-1930, theological and spiritual works including the 4-volume Chinese Bible Encyclopedia, a number of works on language, and a fascinating album of photographs recording the early years of his mission.
