Large oblong 4to, ll. [ii (dedication and title-page), [36 (1 photogravure portrait and 35 of 190 collotype plates rectos and versos)], 1 folding map (‘Plan von Peking’) + 1 folding map of Peking in Chinese only loosely inserted; foxing to photogravure leaf (not affecting images), otherwise clean interior; in original blue cloth-covered boards, with elaborately decorative boards, with gilt characters, dragon and border on upper board, images additionally coloured; fine condition.                                                                     

A dramatic binding to this extensive photographic record of the German expedition.  The editors dedicated the work to the members of the expedition and their followers.

We are aware of a variant binding in cream cloth.
