23 albumen prints from collodion dry plate negative on China (20) and Japan (3) mounted on card, each captioned by Champion himself in ink in French on the mount with a printed list of the photographs tipped-in, the most of them signed by PC. Plano. Original cloth, lower cover blocked in gilt : “Paul Champion”. Some fading, but good condition.
“The Paul Champion’s large-plate views (27 x 33 cm) are exceptionally rare. He was one of the most gifted amateur photographers to work in nineteenth-century China (1865-1866) and his work was of a very high standard” (Terry Bennett).
